real experts
How to be both a listener to the people of Heyvaert and a guest in their home, respecting their time and lived experience?

The people of Heyvaert are experts and should be treated as such. They are producers of and witnesses to the mechanics of the city. As participants and witnesses, they are best placed to know what they themselves want and need. Listening to these local experts must form a key part of the input to the project, in contrast with the opacity of local authorities’ plans. Unfortunately, participatory design is often used as a paint to wash a project of its role in threatening established communities, with photo-op-perfect workshops engineered to manufacture consent.
The project will engage with the people of the area on their terms. Conversations and participation will be predicated on transparency, consent and exchange, rather than extraction. Regular contact with Heyvaertoix will be held preciously as a reminder that real people’s lives are impacted by the issues the project aims to address and that, while student projects are essentially hypothetical, they always contribute to shaping the discourse of how we should build and for whom.

Les habitants de Heyvaert sont des experts et doivent être traités comme tels. Ils sont à la fois acteurs et témoins du fonctionnement de la ville. En tant que participants et témoins, ils sont les mieux placés pour savoir ce qu’ils veulent et ce dont ils ont besoin.
